She lives in the Rosemont neighborhood of Alexandria with her two children, one dog, a cat, and a few fish.

Sallie has a B.A. in Art History and English from Hollins College, and an M.S. in Horticulture and Agronomy from The University of California at Davis. She also studied landscape design, horticulture, and Chesapeake Bay watershed ecology at the United States Department of Agriculture’s graduate school in Washington, D.C.

Sallie Hess started Sallie Hess Interiors in 2010 in San Francisco after leaving viticultural work in the California wine industry, because she is passionate about design—both beauty and functionality—and loves to share her deep knowledge of antiques, art, and architecture. She is still in love with the natural world, and since re-establishing in the D.C. area in 2020, now also uses her background in horticulture to advise clients on all aspects of landscape, outdoor living, and biophilic design.
